Ohmeda Medical Incubators
Tim Wickman, Consultant Paediatrician, asked the Friends if they could help with the purchase of four new incubators for the Starlight Neo-Natal Unit. Their current models were painfully out of date and in need of replacement.
There is a desperate need for these new incubators which are designed for the tiniest babies and will enable them to look after babies as small s 500 grams and below, with much more precision than was previously possible.
The design of this unit is unlike any other incubator available. The central position of the main control panel, dual side doors and a rotating mattress offer easier access to the patient and control from both sides while maximising floor space.
A microprocessor control unit, double walls, and a servo controlled humidifier, as well as an optional servo oxygen control system, are used to maintain a stable environment. This incubator possesses many extra supportive features including an x-ray cassette tray, internal bed tilt, and an optional integrated in-bed weight scale. The unit's elevating base adjusts to a very low height, which provides unprecedented seated access to enhance family interaction. The alarm light and speaker are positioned so as to minimise patient disturbance during alarm conditions.
The Trust has promised that they will try their best to bridge the financial gap and any contribution from the Friends would be a great help. The committee agreed to fund one unit at a cost of £15,000.
