Patients with cardiac problems need to have their heart rate/rhythm and blood pressure monitored over a period to enable their consultant to diagnose their condition.
Tim Wickman, Consultant Paediatrician, asked the Friends if they could help with the purchase of four new incubators for the Starlight Neo-Natal Unit. Their current models were painfully out of date and in need of replacement.

Ethna Doyal of the Cardiac Care Unit needed three volumetric pumps at a cost of £2,500 each and three cardiac monitors at a cost of £1,700 each. The Friends have agreed to fund these items at a total cost of £12,600
In August 2005 the Friends were asked to provide two mortuary trolleys for deceased obese patients. Our Committee were in two minds whether we should purchase these trolleys. Meanwhile Chase Farm Friends went ahead and purchased two trolleys for Chase Farm. When the first trolley was delivered it was found to be too large to fit in the hospital lifts. Several months later it was agreed by the mortuary staff that one of the trolleys was suitable for Chase Farm but they needed a larger body tray. The second trolley was not needed and the Chase Friends offered it to the Friends at Barnet.
Videofluoroscopy is a diagnostic X-ray of swallowing that is done as a moving image and saved to video/DVD. The present equipment is very old and gives limited diagnostic ability due to poor vision and lack of sound as well as a bright green slightly out of focus picture. This service is run by the Speech and Language Therapy Department and currently they hold a clinic every other week.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the forth leading cause of mortality in the U.K and is responsible for 15% of all hospital admissions. Barnet Hospital has some 260 COPD patients in any one year who require non-invasive ventilation. Treatment improves the patients health, while reducing the time in hospital and preventing morbidity which is associated with prolonged ICU admissions.
